The students who come to do their graduation in this institution are often first generation learners from families which have hardly any formal education culture. Our institutional mission is to tap these students and cultivate among them skills that they might use either for self-employment or for seeking jobs in the employment market even as we inculcate values of citizenship and discipline. Our admission policy is also in line with our institutional mission to spread education among the educationally and economically backward communities of society. Therefore, we have made it almost a matter of policy to give admission to all those students who approach us with a simple pass percentage in their 12th examination.
Though the curriculum is standardized for affiliated colleges of Shri Govind Guru University, Godhara (Gujarat University), our college has taken steps to supplement the dissemination of basic information with several value-added learning experiences. Week-long Orientation lectures are held at the beginning of every academic year. Students of the Departments of Sociology, Commerce, Psychology and Economics are involved in In-house survey and research activities while “Meet the Author” programs are regularly arranged by the Gujarati Department. Seminars, workshops and Guest lectures by subject experts also widen the horizons of our students. In addition, study tours and industrial visits enable learning through experience. In line with Gujarat University rules, we conduct 2 internal tests at the college apart from the year-end final University examinations.
As in any educational institution, the teaching-learning process is of central importance in our College. However, as teachers located in a rural college, our situation has demanded that our teaching practices take into account the specific nature of the students coming into the institution. Even though our students come to us with an ability to comprehend their subjects in the mother tongue, their communicative skills are low and their reading habits also are very poor. Their knowledge of the outside world is limited. For all these reasons the development of their personalities also remains below common expectations. To educate these students, we take steps to identify and monitor slow and advanced learners. We have organized a system where class tests, surprise tests, home assignments, class presentations, interactive sessions and group discussions are incorporated into teaching practices. Though it is far more labour intensive than the lecture/notes method generally in use in rural Gujarat, these practices have paid real dividends in the educational lives of our students and has helped to make them confident and self-assured. Systematic planning and monitoring of teaching ensures that all aspects of the syllabus are well covered. In order to enrich teaching, teachers in our College have drawn substantially on insights from seminars and the Orientation and Refresher courses that we have attended as well as our own research in the area. We are now trying to integrate audio-visual aids and internet-based resources into our teaching process. Special mention must also be made of the feedback that we receive from our students both formally and informally and the peer opinion we consistently seek: these have contributed significantly in developing innovative teaching practices.
In a rural college it is very easy for teachers to give up their interest in research as they have little access to libraries or an intellectual community. However, the teachers of our college have kept their research interests alive: 6 teachers have got M. Phil degrees and 8 others have got Ph D degrees, 2 have NET JRF, Quite a few of the teachers are involved in creative work, criticism and translation and have received state, national and international fellowships and recognition. The College has made available facilities that allow teachers to conduct research and to participate in seminars, conferences and workshops. The initiative to set up a College Research Committee (CRC) with a mandated budget to support in-house research is an index of our College’s commitment to research. Research activities conducted under the aegis of the CRC include a socio-economic survey of our students (Sociology Department) and a map of the anxiety levels of our students (Psychology Department). Extra and co-curricular activities are also encouraged by the College.
